Figures are rounded to the nearest whole unit. They are planning estimates, not price quotes.

How to use the calculator

  1. Enter the number of travelers, trip days, and hotel rooms.
  2. Fill in your cost estimates in US dollars, using current prices where you can.
  3. Choose a display currency if you want to see the result in euros, pounds, or Moroccan dirhams.
  4. Set a buffer and review the breakdown. It updates as you type, and Calculate budget takes you straight to the results.
  5. Copy the summary, or print it or save it as a PDF from your browser’s print dialog.

How the estimate is calculated

Each category is calculated separately, then added together. The buffer is applied to the subtotal, and the total is the subtotal plus the buffer.

FlightsFlight price × travelers
AccommodationHotel price per room × rooms × nights (days − 1)
Food and drinksDaily food cost × travelers × trip days
Local transportationDaily group transport cost × trip days
Activities and attractionsCost per person × travelers
Other costsEntered once for the whole trip
BufferSubtotal × buffer percentage

Tips for a more realistic budget

  • Use quotes, not guesses. Flight and hotel prices change with the season, the day of the week, and how early you book, so replace the example amounts with current prices for your dates.
  • Add taxes and tips. Listed prices in the United States often exclude sales tax, and tipping is customary in restaurants and for many services. Include both in your food and other costs.
  • Count the distances. On multi-stop trips, domestic flights, rental cars, fuel, parking, and tolls can add up, so use the transport field for them.
  • Check entry requirements early. Visitors from many countries need a visa or an ESTA, and fees and processing times vary. See the U.S. Department of State’s travel and visa information and the official ESTA website.
  • Plan for park fees. If your route includes national parks, check entrance fees and any reservation rules on the National Park Service website.
  • Keep a buffer. A larger buffer suits trips with several stops, where plans are more likely to change.

Frequently asked questions

How much money do I need for a trip to the USA?

There is no single figure. The total depends on where you fly from, which cities you visit, the season, your trip length, and how you travel. Enter current quotes for your own dates, then use the buffer to cover price changes.

Does this calculator show live prices?

No. It does the arithmetic on the amounts you enter and does not retrieve live airline, hotel, car rental, or attraction prices.

Are the currency conversions live?

No. The calculator uses fixed, approximate rates for planning only. Check a current exchange rate or ask your bank before you pay.

How are hotel nights counted?

Nights equal trip days minus one, so a 7-day trip is priced as 6 nights. The nightly rate is multiplied by the number of rooms. If your trip includes a different number of nights, adjust the trip length or the nightly rate.

What should I include in “Other costs”?

Think of anything the other fields do not cover: travel insurance, mobile data, baggage fees, parking, laundry, and any visa or travel authorization fee that applies to you.

Does the calculator save or send my numbers?

No. The calculation runs in your browser, and this page does not store or send your entries. Use “Copy summary” or “Print or save as PDF” if you want to keep a record.

Important: This calculator is a planning aid, not financial advice or a price quote. Actual costs vary by city, season, exchange rate, taxes, and personal choices. Check prices and entry requirements before you book.
